Boko Haram claims Abuja bombings

Monday, 5 October 2015

LAGOS (AFP) - Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for twin bomb attacks on the outskirts of Nigerias capital, Abuja, the group said in a message posted on social media on Sunday evening. At least 18 people were killed and 41 injured in the bombings on Friday night, in Kuje, to the west of Abuja, and in Nyanya, to the east, the authorities said.Suspicion immediately fell on the militants, who last year said they were behind two attacks in Nyanya that left more than 90 dead. The claim of responsibility on Twitter was signed by Islamic State in West Africa Province, used by Boko Haram since its pledge of allegiance to the militants in Syria and Iraq in March. It showed photographs of three men in combat fatigues, holding automatic weapons and in front of the groups insignia, and claimed they had carried out martyrdom operations. The police on Saturday said preliminary investigations revealed the bomb blasts were carried out by two suicide bombers -- a male and a female. The Arabic message said the trios targets were police stations in Nyanya and Kuje, calling them strongholds of the apostates (non-believers), according to the SITE Intelligence Group. One militant attacked Nyanya, the other two Kuje, it said.Boko Haram has previously attacked police stations and prisons, where militant fighters have been held. Kuje prison, near Abujas airport, currently houses dozens of Boko Haram inmates.

Suspected rebels kill three soldiers in India-held Kashmir

SRINAGAR (AFP) - Suspected rebels killed three Indian soldiers during firing overnight near the heavily militarised border dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan, an Indian army spokesman said on Monday.Indian soldiers discovered their colleagues bodies on Monday morning during a search for militants in Hafruda forest, 140 kilometres northwest of India-held Kashmirs main city of Srinagar. We had three fatalities. The soldiers came under fire during the night, Indian army spokesman colonel N. N. Joshi told AFP.Joshi said an armed militant was also killed in a separate encounter in the nearby valley of Lolab overnight. On Sunday two suspected militants, whom the army claimed belonged to the Jaish-i-Muhammad group, were killed during a gunbattle in Tral area south of Srinagar. A soldier was injured in the encounter.Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British colonial rule in 1947. But both claim the territory in its entirety.Several rebel groups have for decades been fighting hundreds of thousands of Indian forces deployed in the region, seeking independence for the territory or its merger with Pakistan.Indian often accuses Pakistan of training and arming rebels, while Islamabad says it only provides diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri peoples struggle for self-determination. Tens of thousands have died in the conflict, mostly civilians.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif last week proposed a new peace initiative with India over Kashmir, suggesting demilitarisation of the disputed territory, after a surge in cross-border shelling. The firing has killed dozens of civilians since last year.Premier Nawazs proposal was rejected by India.

MSF leaves Afghan city, calls hospital air strike 'war crime'

Kabul (AFP) - Medical charity MSF said it had shut down operations in the Afghan city of Kunduz after an apparent US bombing raid on its hospital, demanding an independent investigation into what it labelled a war crime.Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said 22 people were killed, some of whom burned to death in their beds as the bombardment continued for more than an hour early Saturday, even after US and Afghan authorities were informed the hospital had been hit.Under the clear presumption that a war crime has been committed, MSF demands that a full and transparent investigation into the event be conducted by an independent international body, MSF general director Christopher Stokes said.Stokes also hit out at claims by Afghan officials that insurgents were using the hospital building as a position to target Afghan forces and civilians. These statements imply that Afghan and US forces working together decided to raze to the ground a fully functioning hospital with more than 180 staff and patients inside because they claim that members of the Taliban were present, he said. This amounts to an admission of a war crime. This utterly contradicts the initial attempts of the US government to minimise the attack as collateral damage.MSF, which stands for Medecins Sans Frontieres in French, has denied any combatants were present in the facility. The group said Afghan and coalition troops were fully aware of the exact location of the hospital, having been given GPS co-ordinates of a facility which had been providing care for four years. It added that despite frantic calls to military officials in Kabul and Washington, the main building housing the intensive care unit and emergency rooms was repeatedly, very precisely hit almost every 15 minutes for more than an hour.It is the only medical facility in the whole northeastern region of Afghanistan that can deal with major war injuries. Its closure, even temporarily, could have a devastating impact on local civilians. The MSF hospital is not functional anymore. All critical patients have been referred to other health facilities and no MSF staff are working in our hospital, Kate Stegeman, a spokeswoman for the charity, told AFP.Stegeman said she could not confirm whether the trauma centre will reopen.MSF said some 105 patients and their caregivers, as well as more than 80 international and local MSF staff, were in the hospital at the time of the bombing. The bombs hit and then we heard the plane circle round, said Heman Nagarathnam, MSFs head of programmes in northern Afghanistan. There was a pause, and then more bombs hit. This happened again and again. When I made it out from the office, the main hospital building was engulfed in flames. Those people that could had moved quickly to the building’s two bunkers to seek safety. But patients who were unable to escape burned to death as they lay in their beds. The hospitals main building was completely gutted and some bodies of those trapped inside were charred beyond recognition. The dead included 12 MSF staff and 10 patients, among them three children.Tragic incidentUS President Barack Obama offered his deepest condolences for what he called a tragic incident. The Department of Defense has launched a full investigation, and we will await the results of that inquiry before making a definitive judgement as to the circumstances of this tragedy, Obama said. But MSFs stokes said: Relying only on an internal investigation by a party to the conflict would be wholly insufficient.NATO earlier conceded US forces may have been behind the bombing, after they launched a strike which they said was intended to target militants. The incident has renewed concerns about the use of US air strikes in Afghanistan, a deeply contentious issue in the 14-year campaign against Taliban insurgents.UN rights chief Zeid Raad Al Hussein earlier also called for a full and transparent probe, noting: An air strike on a hospital may amount to a war crime. This event is utterly tragic, inexcusable and possibly even criminal, he said. The air raid came five days after Taliban fighters seized control of the strategic northern city of Kunduz, in their most spectacular victory since being toppled from power by a US-led coalition in 2001.Afghan forces, backed up by their NATO allies, claim to have wrestled back control of the city.MSFs withdrawal from Kunduz comes as the region grapples with a humanitarian crisis, with food and medicine shortages affecting thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire between government forces and insurgents. At least 60 people are known to have died and 400 to have been wounded in the past weeks fighting.

Israeli air raid hits Gaza after rocket attack: army

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel carried out an air strike on the Gaza Strip early on Monday in response to a Palestinian rocket attack from the territory, an army statement said.Israel Air Force aircraft targeted a Hamas terror site in the northern Gaza Strip, it said. The rocket was fired into southern Israel late on Sunday but hit open ground, the army said.No casualties were reported on either side. The military said that so far this year 16 rockets have been launched at Israel from Gaza.On September 30, Israeli warplanes hit four training camps of Hamass armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, in response to a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave that was intercepted by Israels Iron Dome air defence system. The camps were empty at the time and nobody was injured.Salafist militants claiming links to the Islamic State group have said they were behind recent rocket fire from Gaza, but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all such incidents.Hamas is the Islamist movement that runs Gaza and has fought three wars with Israel since 2008, including a devastating conflict last summer which left some 2,200 Palestinians dead and more than 100,000 homeless.

Turkey says intercepted Russian jet violating its air space

ANKARA (AFP) - Turkey said on Monday its F-16 jets had at the weekend intercepted a Russian fighter plane which violated Turkish air space near the Syrian border, forcing the aircraft to turn back.Turkey summoned the Russian ambassador in Ankara to the foreign ministry and strongly protested the violation, the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement. It demanded that any such violation not be repeated, otherwise Russia will be responsible for any undesired incident that may occur. The Russian jet infringed Turkish airspace at 12:08 pm (0908 GMT) on Saturday south of the Yayladagi region in Turkeys southern Hatay province, according to the foreign ministry. The Russian aircraft exited Turkish airspace into Syria after it was intercepted by two F-16s from the Turkish Air Force, which were conducting patrols in the region, it added.Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu called his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov to convey Ankaras unease, the statement said.He also made telephone conversations with counterparts from NATO allies, as well as NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, the ministry said.Russia and Turkey have long been at odds over the crisis in Syria, with Moscow emerging as Syrian President Bashar al-Assads key international backer and Ankara urging his ouster as the only solution to the conflict.Turkey has labelled Russias bombing campaign in Syria as unacceptable with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warning that Moscow was making a grave mistake.Russias strikes in Syria began just a week after Erdogan visited Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin and attend the opening of a new mosque. It is still unclear if Putin gave Erdogan any advance warning of Russias plan for the air strikes at the talks.Erdogan on Saturday urged Putin to reconsider Moscows bombing campaign, accusing the Russian military of turning a blind eye to the killing of dozens of civilians.Britains ambassador to Ankara Richard Moore said Russias incursion into Turkish airspace was reckless and worrying.UK, and its other NATO Allies, stand shoulder to shoulder with Turkey, he wrote on Twitter.

Islamic State militants blow up ancient Arch of Triumph in Palmyra

(Reuters) - Islamic State militants have blown up the Arch of Triumph, a major monument in the 2,000-year-old Roman city of Palmyra, Syrias antiquities chief said on Sunday, after they destroyed two ancient temples at the central Syrian site in recent months.Maamoun Abdulkarim told Reuters that sources in Palmyra had confirmed that the Arch of Triumph, a jewel in the exquisite collection of ruins in the oasis city, had been blown up.Islamic State militants have blown up temples at the Roman-era UNESCO World Heritage site, which it has controlled since capturing Palmyra from Syrian government forces in May and mined other monuments and historic buildings. The group considers the buildings sacrilegious. Its as though there is a curse that has befallen this city and I expect only news that will shock us. If the city remains in their hands the city is doomed, Abdulkarim told Reuters. It is now wanton destruction ... their acts of vengeance are no longer ideologically driven because they are now blowing up buildings with no religious meaning, he added. In August, the militants blew up the temple of Baal Shamin, then the Temple of Bel, one of the best preserved Roman-era sites.Earlier this month it was also confirmed the militants had destroyed some of the best preserved of Palmyras funeral towers, sandstone constructions built to hold the remains of the ancient citys richest families.Palmyra was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world, according to cultural agency UNESCO, which has described it as the crossroads of several civilisations.Islamic State has declared a caliphate in territory it holds across Syria and Iraq and has destroyed other monuments it says are pagan and sacrilegious.UNESCO has called such acts war crimes and says Islamic State seeks to wipe out evidence of Syrias diverse heritage. Before the capture of the city, Syrian officials said they had moved hundreds of ancient statues to safe locations.

Bitcoin flounders in Australia as regulatory worries bite

SYDNEY (Reuters) Australian businesses are turning their backs on bitcoin, as signs grow that the cryptocurrencys mainstream appeal is fading.Concerns about bitcoins potential crime links mean many businesses have stopped accepting it, a trend accelerated by Australian banks move last month to close the accounts of 13 of the countrys 17 bitcoin exchanges. The development is a blow to hopes of bitcoin fans that the currency can play a significant role in everyday business transactions in developed economies, with Australia once seen as one of its most promising markets. It is estimated to hold 7 percent of the currencys $3.5 billion global value, a sizeable figure in a country of just 24 million people.Weve got a squeaky clean reputation, and thats actually worth a lot more to us than dipping into this, said James Snodgrass, principal of Sydneys Forsyth Real Estate, which ditched the currency in late 2014 after the firm was investigated by the federal tax office.Forsyth had offered to collect home deposits and other realtor fees via bitcoin to cater to international buyers. The tax office probe found no wrongdoing but Forsyth was burned by the negative publicity and bailed out before ever taking a bitcoin payment.Although most mainstream banks in Europe and the U.S. already refuse to keep bitcoin-affiliated accounts, developments in Australia represent the first coordinated shutdown of bitcoin exchanges by a countrys banking system. The move makes it much harder for people to convert regular currencies in to or out of bitcoin, threatening its long-term value. It really runs on people using bitcoin, and if nobody uses it then its worthless, said University of Technology Sydney senior finance lecturer Adrian Lee.BANK SHUTDOWNThe banks shutdown appears at odds with a government inquiry which in August recommended removing sales tax for people who buy bitcoin. The Australian anti-money laundering agency, AUSTRAC, told Reuters that banks have no legal obligation to close bitcoin accounts. The so-called Big Four banks - Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Banking Corp, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and National Australia Bank - directed inquiries about bitcoin to the Australian Bankers Association.Tony Pearson, the associations acting chief executive, wouldnt confirm the coordinated rejection of bitcoin but said in an email that its lack of transparency and regulatory oversight raises a number of risks for users and also poses risks for the payments system, the integrity of the financial system and the erosion of the tax base.Australias organized crime agency has said it is concerned the currencys untraceable nature makes it attractive for money laundering and selling illicit drugs. In the U.K. and the U.S., most large banks have already cut ties with bitcoin account holders, but lack of industry co-ordination has left room for individual lenders to support the currency, including Germanys Fidor Bank AG, which operates in Britain, and tech-focused Californian lender Silicon Valley Bank.CLOSE, MOVE OFFSHORE OR SNEAK AROUNDThe 13 Australian bitcoin exchanges whose accounts were closed by the banks have shut operations. The remaining four have had their accounts frozen, and now face three options: close, move overseas or spread their business into several smaller bank accounts to avoid detection by their banks.Buyabitcoin.com.au, one of the remaining four exchanges, said it is still considering its options. It makes it, obviously, hard to take payments from our customers, but we have a couple of relationships left, said Andrew Smith, general manager of the Melbourne-based exchange.Smith declined to identify which bank his firm is now using from fear of repercussions but said he plans to move the business offshore. Two sources told Reuters that regional lender Bank of Queensland still held some bitcoin accounts. The bank said in an email that virtual currencies fall outside of our risk appetite but did not deny or confirm it had these accounts.RETAIL PULLOUTSome industry watchers believe ambivalence may be bitcoins biggest problem. At least six Australian retail businesses, which as recently as 2014 courted publicity for offering sales by bitcoin, told Reuters they were considering exiting the currency. If governments begin to aggressively attack the whole idea of cryptocurrencies and give it a bad name, it might have an adverse effect on our brand by accepting it, said David Brim, co-founder of off-road vehicle maker Tomcar Australia, which has sold one car using bitcoin since introducing it in November 2014.Grant Fairweather, owner of the Metropolitan Hotel in Sydney, said he started accepting bitcoin when a group of digital currency fans chose his pub as their regular meeting venue. They tell me that its doing quite well, but that doesnt transpose into here, said Fairweather, who sells about A$100 ($70) worth of drinks via bitcoin from the meetings and does no other bitcoin trade. An online clothing retailer told Reuters she had made no bitcoin sales since introducing the service in 2013 and asked not to be named, saying since bitcoins going out anyway, wed rather not throw our name back into it.

Football: Beating Man Utd answers critics, says Wenger

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his team had answered some of their critics after blowing Premier League title rivals Manchester United off the park in a resounding 3-0 victory.Wenger was roundly criticised in the British press after his sides 3-2 loss to Olympiakos last week left them struggling to avoid a group-stage exit in the Champions League and hit out at the media for focusing on his decision to select blundering second-choice goalkeeper David Ospina. But his players responded in dazzling fashion at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, scoring three times in the first 19 minutes en route to a win that sent them up to second place in the table.Thats what you want in games of that stature, Wenger said.We started very strong, we decided to press very high, to play at a great pace, and we did that very well.In the second half we decided to be disciplined, control the result, and we did that very well as well, so we had two aspects in our game that are pleasing and were convincing today (Sunday). It gives a strong answer to all the questions that were raised during the week.Arsenal now trail leaders Manchester City by two points, with United below them on goal difference, and Wenger concurred when it was put to him that his side had sent out a message about their title credentials. To win in a big game is always a statement, said the Frenchman, whose side also hit the bar through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain late on.We are in it, we are two points off the leaders, Manchester City, so I hope that result today will give us belief and ambition to fight for it.- Rooney very important -===========================Alexis Sanchez scored Arsenals first and third goals, a cheeky back-heel in the sixth minute followed by an 18-year thunderbolt, with Theo Walcott teeing up Mesut Ozil to slot home 74 seconds after the Chileans opener.Wenger revealed that Sanchez, who went off in the 81st minute, had sustained a little groin problem, but said that he expected him to be fit for Chiles opening 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Peru.United manager Louis van Gaal admitted that he was amazed by the lack of aggression shown by his side in the opening stages, particularly after a run of four successive wins in all competitions. The visitors created only two real chances, Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech saving smartly from Anthony Martial and Bastian Schweinsteiger, and were badly overrun in midfield in the early stages. But Van Gaal dismissed suggestions that he had erred by leaving out holding midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, having instead fielded Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick, and refused to discuss a disappointing display by captain Wayne Rooney.I never can answer that question because when I say it in a positive way, its maybe not good and when I say it in a negative way, then its in all the headlines tomorrow that I am not satisfied about the performance of Wayne Rooney, he said.I talk about team and Wayne Rooney is a very important part of our team because hes the captain. Thats much more important than individual evaluation in a newspaper.Van Gaal will not see his players again until after the international break and he expressed frustration that he will not have an opportunity to help them shake Sundays result out of their systems.Weve lost in a way you cannot lose when youre top of the league. You cannot start like we have started, said the Dutchman, whose side visit Everton in their next league game on October 17.The worst thing is that everybody is going away, even from London airports. And I cannot build up a new situation so that they have the confidence to play football and win the next battle away at Everton, for example.

Assad: Russian failure in Syria would 'destroy' Mideast

DAMASCUS (AFP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned the success of Russias military intervention in his war-torn country was vital for the entire Middle East, as Moscow ramped up its bombing campaign Sunday.Russian raids against what Moscow says are Islamic State group targets took place for a fifth day despite accusations in the West that the strikes are mainly targeting moderate opponents of the regime. The alliance between Russia, Syria, Iraq and Iran must succeed or else the whole region will be destroyed, Assad said in an interview broadcast by Iranian state television. The chances of success for this coalition are great and not insignificant, he added.Russia said it had dropped concrete-buster munitions on new IS targets and destroyed command posts, storehouses and other infrastructure. From the airbase of Hmeimim, the Russian aviation group is continuing to ramp up air strikes using high-precision missiles against the ISIS facilities in Syria, said the defence ministry, referring to IS.Washington accuses Russia of seeking to buttress Assad and of targeting Western-backed moderate opposition and IS fighters alike.US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter arrived in Madrid Sunday on the first leg of a European tour and will meet officials from Spain, Italy and Britain as well as NATO amid Western alarm over Russias foray into Syria.President Barack Obama called Russias dramatic intervention a recipe for disaster, but pledged Washington would not be drawn into a proxy war.British Prime Minister David Cameron urged Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday to change direction in Syria and recognise that Assad must be replaced.Tragically, what has happened is that most of the Russian air strikes... have been in parts of Syria not controlled by ISIL (IS) but by other opponents of the regime, Cameron told the BBC.Putins spokesman challenged the Wests distinction between jihadist and other Islamist rebel groups.Putin, who met the leaders of France and Germany in Paris on Friday, had asked what the difference between the moderate opposition and the immoderate opposition is, Dmitry Peskov said on television late Saturday.Moscow is keen to turn the tables on the United States, suggesting it is Washington and its allies that often hit the wrong targets. When the conversation has turned to this, our president remembered, Peskov said of the Paris talks. He also remembered the wedding in Yemen and so on, Peskov added, referring to an alleged air strike that killed more than 130 people and for which a Saudi-led anti-rebel coalition denied responsibility. An apparent US air strike on an Afghan hospital that killed 19 people on Saturday is also expected to play into the Kremlins hands.Assad on Sunday poured scorn on Western-led efforts to take on IS, which has managed to make some gains in Syria even though it has been bombed for more than a year by US-led coalition jets. I havent seen results. I even see results that are contrary (to the coalitions aim). Terrorism has seen a geographic expansion and the number of recruits to terrorist groups has increased, he said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, one of Assads fiercest critics, reiterated his call for Moscow to change its strategy. The steps Russia is taking and the bombing campaign in Syria is unacceptable in any way for Turkey, Erdogan said.Unfortunately, Russia is making a grave mistake.German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that while military efforts were needed in Syria, they would not be enough to end the bloodshed. We need a political process, which has had difficulties getting under way, she said on radio.Putin has said Moscow needs to hunt down IS militants before they cross into Russia, which has a large Muslim population.Moscow said on Sunday that over the past 24 hours its jets had made 20 sorties against 10 IS targets. But the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, said that warplanes, believed to be Russian, carried out many strikes against two villages in the north of Homs province. One person was killed and others wounded, it said. Another six civilians were killed in apparent Russian strikes in Idlib, the Observatory said on Saturday. Russia denies its strikes have led to civilian casualties and has instead hailed the results of the first three days of bombing, referring to panic among militants.Raids ordered by Moscow are reported to have hit areas controlled by moderate groups and prompted a claim by US Senator John McCain that Russian jets had killed rebels trained and funded by the CIA.

Adoption or trafficking? Fears grow for Uganda's 'orphans'

MPIGI (AFP) - When Agatha Namusisi, 64, let her grandson leave Uganda for medical treatment abroad, she assumed he would return, but more than a year later she says he has disappeared. They are nowhere to be seen, Namusisi said of the seven-year old boy and his Ugandan carer who travelled together to the United States in May last year, after an Arizona-based Christian charity arranged for surgery to correct his crippling spinal deformity. The case is just one example of international adoption gone wrong through misunderstanding, negligence or even criminality, a trend that has Ugandan lawmakers worried, with a 400 percent increase in orphans going to the US alone between 2006 and 2013.African Childrens Charities (ACC) paid for Namusisis grandson, Mohammad Luwasi, to travel to the US and receive pro bono surgery after reading a newspaper report about his plight.Believing him to be an orphan, on the basis of allegedly false documents, the charity took custody of the boy and, according to Dickson Ogwang at the Ugandan embassy in Washington, plans to have him adopted there. But Luwasis father, 29-year old carpenter Isha Ssemata, says he wants his son back.I miss him, he said. I dont want anyone to adopt my child.A series of unfortunate events led to Luwasis predicament. After his wife died Ssemata couldnt afford to look after his disabled son, so took him to live with Namusisi, the grandmother. She too was poverty-stricken, so when a charity offered to pay for his treatment, she seized the chance. Now father and grandmother fear he may never return.I signed papers I could not read, but I knew they were to help get this boy from here to America for treatment, said Namusisi. In Uganda, there is no word for adoption in the Western sense, implying permanence. Rather, sending children abroad is seen as similar to enrolling them at boarding school or an apprenticeship.- Dubious circumstances -===========================In May, Ugandas parliament debated the dubious circumstances in which hundreds of children leave the country despite an estimated 80 percent of so-called orphans having living relatives and the existence of a domestic adoption programme.A government report is soon to be published into alleged corruption and deception in international adoptions. The government has signalled its intent to close a legal loophole enabling foreigners to adopt while legislators warn that some cases border on trafficking, a term used by a number of officials to describe Luwasis case.ACC President Vikki Kattman denies trafficking Luwasi -- whom she called Lewis -- and said there was no intention to put him up for adoption. We will legally return Lewis to Uganda when it is appropriate, Kattman said, declining to specify a timeframe. ACC insists it operates legally in Uganda, a claim dismissed by Moses Binoga, head of the countrys anti-trafficking task force.Luwasis case is due in court in Kampala, where Ugandan officials will argue for the boy to be returned to Uganda.James Kabogozza, assistant commissioner for youth and children in the ministry of gender, said international adoption had become a business with lawyers, childrens homes, even adoption agencies, all benefitting.Kabogozza argued that local adoption should always be the first option.Others blame prospective parents for blindly believing adoption agency claims that the children are orphans. In failing to properly scrutinise such agencies, Americans adopting from Uganda are now complicit in corruption and unethical practices said one childrens rights activist.

Russia making 'grave mistake' in Syria: Turkey's Erdogan

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Russias bombing campaign in Syria is a grave mistake and its support for the regime will be judged by history, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned on Sunday. The steps Russia is taking and the bombing campaign in Syria are quite unacceptable to Turkey, Erdogan told reporters at Istanbul airport before leaving for a visit to France.(...) Unfortunately, Russia is making a grave mistake, he said.Given Moscows friendly relations with Turkey, its actions in Syria are worrying and disturbing, Erdogan said. The strikes will isolate Russia in the region, he predicted. Russia and Turkey have long been at odds over Syria, with Moscow emerging as Syrian President Bashar al-Assads key international backer and Ankara seeing his ouster as the only solution to the conflict.Whats Russia trying achieve there anyway? Erdogan asked. It intervened because this was what the regime in Syria demanded. But theres no obligation to respond like this every time a regime insists on it, he said.Erdogan blamed not only Russia but also Iran, which was defending Assad and waging state terrorism in Syria. The countries that cooperate with the (Syrian) regime will be accountable to history, he warned.Russia, which began the air strikes in Syria last week, insists the operation only targets jihadists. But Turkey and several of its Western allies have said moderates fighting Assads regime have also been hit.Erdogan on Saturday urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to reconsider Moscows bombing campaign, accusing the Russian military of turning a blind eye to the killing of dozens of civilians.Turkey has long been lobbying for a safe zone free of IS fighters, where some of the two million Syrian refugees hosted by Turkey could go.The plan has met with only a lukewarm reception from Turkeys partners and its prospects may be further dimmed by Russias air campaign. But Erdogan on Sunday vowed to push hard on the idea of a haven. It has by no means dropped off our agenda. But there has to be a no-fly zone too. Otherwise, the area could be lethal.Erdogan said Turkey had spent $7.5 billion (6.69 billion euros) on Syrian refugees -- a burden that, he said, was part of Turkeys moral duty.

17 dead as heavy flooding hits French Riviera

NICE (AFP) - Violent storms and flooding along the French Riviera have killed at least 17 people and another four are still missing in what were described as apocalyptic scenes, local officials said Sunday. Up to 180 millimetres (seven inches) of rain fell in just three hours overnight, transforming the glitzy streets of Cannes, Nice and Antibes into debris-strewn rivers. In Cannes -- home of the glitzy film festival -- the torrent carried some cars out to sea, city hall said. Communications to the region -- one of the wealthiest in France, and a magnet for visitors from around the world -- were badly hit and thousands of residents were left without power.President Francois Hollande visited the region, expressing the solidarity of the nation to those affected -- but also warning that the disaster suggested an environmental message had to be learnt. There have always been always catastrophes. But their rhythm and intensity are on the increase, he said, urging that environmental decisions be taken as France prepares to host UN-led climate talks in December on a post-2020 pact to curb greenhouse gases.Three people died when water engulfed a retirement home at Biot near Antibes, and three drowned when their car was trapped by rising waters in a small tunnel at Vallauris-Golfe-Juan.Rescue teams at Mandelieu-la-Napoule said the water was so murky that it hampered the search for further bodies in underground car parks, where at least seven people died. Its apocalyptic, said mayor Henri Leroy. There are thousands of vehicles. There could be more bodies. In Cannes, where three people were listed as dead, mayor David Lisnard had tough words for some residents who, he said, were not always disciplined.Im not judging, because I dont know how I would react in that situation, but it appears we had some people that were very attached to their vehicles when they should have been saving lives.Nine people were arrested for trying to steal from shops after the storm, he added.Hundreds of Italian pilgrims returning from the French shrine of Lourdes were trapped overnight as trains were cancelled across the region.A special track was opened to let the pilgrims, many of them elderly and travelling with doctors, proceed at a slow pace. The storm did serious damage to the railway infrastructure, tracks, crossings, electrical lines, primarily around the area of Cannes, a spokesman for French rail company SNCF told AFP.Around 15,000 homes remained without power after initially 27,000 residences suffered outages affecting some 700,000 people, network authorities said. Shocked residents gave graphic accounts of the drama.I saw water pour in from the veranda. Within five minutes, it was up to my waist, said France Oberlin, a retired resident of Mandelieu-la-Napoule. I couldnt open the doors but luckily a neighbour came.Seated on a plastic chair, surrounded by debris and overturned cars, she looked despairingly at her ground-floor apartment, in which everything had been destroyed. Around 500 people, many of them British and Danish tourists, were stranded at Nice airport, and a motorway near Antibes was flooded when a small river, the Brague, burst its banks.A Nice-Nantes match in Frances first football division was called off after the pitch became a quagmire.Nices mayors office estimated the city had received 10 percent of its average annual rainfall in the past two days alone.By dawn, the worst storms had passed over the French mainland and were headed for the Italian coast, Meteo-France said. The regions worst flood in the past 25 years was in June 2010, when 25 people were killed and there was one billion euros ($1.12 billion) of damage. In December 1999, 92 people in France were killed by flooding, fallen trees and other storm damage caused by hurricane-strength winds that struck northwestern Europe.

Dollar steady against emerging market currencies

TOKYO (AFP) - The dollar faced selling pressure against major currencies but strengthened against most of its Asia-Pacific peers Monday as concerns over emerging economies remained strong despite an expected delay in Washingtons rate hike. The US unit edged down to 119.93 yen in Tokyo morning trade from 119.92 in New York late Friday and 120.05 in Tokyo earlier that day.The euro traded at $1.1243 and 134.81 yen in Tokyo from $1.1219 and 134.53 yen in US trade.Dollar-selling sentiment is growing against major currencies after the job reports, Minori Uchida, head of Tokyo global markets research at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, told AFP.The US Labor Departments September report showed stalling job growth in the past two months, stagnating wages, and the participation rate falling to a 38-year low, dampening the likelihood of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in October. The Fed is extremely unlikely to begin policy normalisation as soon as this month and December is looking tenuous too, Philip Borkin, a senior economist in Auckland at ANZ Bank, said in a client note, according to Bloomberg News.Calls on the Fed to raise interest rates were putting renewed pressure on emerging economies as investors withdraw their cash to seek better returns in the US.But Tokyo-Mitsubishis Uchida said: The dollar should not be so weak against Asian currencies as players still cant see many encouraging factors to support the regional currencies right now.The Singapore dollar fell by 0.05 percent from Friday against the US unit, the South Korean won slipped 0.59 percent and the Taiwan dollar lost 0.61 percent. The Indian rupee declined 0.12 percent and the Indonesian rupiah edged down 0.03 percent but the Thai baht rose 0.14 percent.

Death toll in Guatemala landslide hits 131: official

SANTA CATARINA PINULA (AFP) - At least 131 people were killed in mudslides that smashed into a village outside Guatemala City, officials said Sunday, three days after the disaster struck the Central American nation.Unfortunately, a new count shows that there are 131 confirmed dead and recovered, and still about 300 people missing and unaccounted for, said volunteer fire brigade spokesman Julio Sanchez. He told reporters that several young children, including newborn babies, were among the dead in Santa Catarina Pinula. On Thursday night, following heavy rain, waterlogged earth and debris tore through the village of El Cambray II, in the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula, destroying or damaging at least 125 homes.Relatives of the missing checked in at a makeshift morgue set up next to the buried homes.Municipal authorities had urged the community, about 15 kilometers (10 miles) east of the capital Guatemala City, to relocate several times, most recently in November of last year. But many families have refused, saying that they have nowhere to go.We cant live here any more, Carlos Hernandez, an electrician who survived the landslide, lamented as he stepped between rescuers with his few remaining belongings on his shoulder.Late Sunday, rescue workers had to suspend their work when rain resumed, making things too dangerous to continue before Monday. The bad news came as, with every passing hour, hopes for finding survivors fade a bit further. The best hope for rescuing victims in landslides, cave-ins and earthquakes is within 72 hours of the tragedy. That critical window lapses at 0400 GMT Monday. The destruction was sudden and decisive.I went on an errand for my mother and when I returned there was nothing, said Carlos Ac, 17. He was still waiting for word about his missing mother and seven siblings. In gray denim trousers and a black coat -- now the only clothes he has -- Ac said his family had come from the city of Quetzaltenango, approximately 200 kilometers to the west of the capital, to sell tortillas.Alex Lopez, 44, called his ex-wife and daughters as soon as he heard of the landslide. It rang. But there was no answer, he told AFP.Desperate families have reported receiving text messages from people they believed to still be trapped.Officials said the impact of the heavy rain was exacerbated by a nearby river, and that municipal authorities had recommended the community relocate last year.Eight people had already died in previous weather-related events tied to Guatemalas rainy season, which lasts from May to November, according to government data.Last years rainy season was tied to 29 deaths and damage to more than 9,000 homes.More than 53 percent Guatemalas population of 16 million lives in poverty. And the scars from a 36-year civil war that ended in 1996 are still fresh.Besides grinding poverty and corruption, Guatemalans endure horrific crime rates and powerful, vicious street gangs blamed for giving their country one of the worlds highest murder rates.

Tennis: 'Li Na factor' not enough for China

WUHAN (AFP) - Li Nas Grand Slam wins did miraculous things for tennis in China but a cultural shift away from central planning towards individual development is needed if the country is to emerge as a powerhouse, experts say.Tangible evidence of tenniss growth in China comes in the form of the Wuhan Opens new, 15,000-seat stadium, opened by Li last month, which has a similar capacity to Wimbledons Centre Court.Steady crowds and the presence of 12 Chinese players in the womens top 200 -- behind only Russia, the United States and the Czech Republic -- also demonstrate tenniss upward trajectory.Much of the growth is directly attributable to Li, Asias first Grand Slam singles champion who won two major titles before she retired on the eve of last years inaugural Wuhan Open. But many observers believe Chinas next Grand Slam winner could be as many as 10 years away, with the dominance of the state-run sports system hampering players development.Simon Chadwick, professor of sport business strategy at Britains Coventry University Business School, suggests China needs a cultural rethink which will not sit comfortably with the authorities. The factory-style government development of athletes may work in sports such as gymnastics, but tennis is different requiring a very clear and simple focus on individuals, Chadwick said.Unless China embraces this notion then one imagines that the country will find it difficult to enable the type of cultural change that is required to promote the sports development.Li herself exemplifies the tensions that exist between Chinas government sports set-up and its ambitions to shine on the world stage.Li, who at a young age was ordered to abandon badminton for tennis against her will, famously split from the state system to organise her own sponsorship and be coached by her husband. It took years of difficulty and media sniping before she finally made it big late in her career, becoming a superstar in her home country, complete with a bronze statue in her native Wuhan.- Tennis with Chinese characteristics -=======================================Jorge Salkeld, a Womens Tennis Association (WTA) board member and senior vice president at Octagon Tennis, the Wuhan Opens promoter for the tournament, said the Li Na factor has seen the popularity of tennis in China surge.Provincial governments have quickly got on board, developing tennis academies and domestic championships -- although regional rivalries are a difficult distraction for Chinese players.(Sport is) all state-funded and if a province is a winner in whatever national games then they are even more centrally funded, he said. The tricky part is that (the) provinces main objective is to win the national games, he explained, which diverts attention away from the professional tennis tours. When a player needs to be training on clay to prepare for the qualifications for Roland Garros, or grass to prepare for Wimbledon, they have another schedule going on at the same time. So that has created problems, said Salkeld. However, it is clear that China has embraced the sport, and when that happens, things can move quickly -- and in unexpected directions.Yi Guoqing, tournament director and general manager of the Wuhan Sports Development Institute, said it took just two years from the start of negotiations for the Wuhan Open to become reality. He compared tennis in China to the market reforms under Deng Xiaoping, dubbed socialism with Chinese characteristics which allowed it to flourish into the worlds number two economy. The government means making the policies, the hand of the market is the participation of the society, said Yi.Not only (in) tennis, he added. The whole economy of China is taking the same road. It is changing and I believe it will be more open in the future. And this may allow the country to create an entirely new model of tennis -- one with Chinese characteristics.

Oil extends gains in Asia

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Oil extended gains in Asia Monday as a decline in US drilling pointed to a slowdown in production, but concerns over demand remain after a disappointing US jobs report.A report from Baker Hughes Inc. said the number of active rigs in the United States fell by 26 to 614 last week, the lowest in five years, helping ease concerns over the global crude oversupply that has depressed prices. But poor unemployment data from the US continued to weigh on the market. The US Labor Department said Friday that jobs growth in the worlds biggest economy and top oil consumer faltered in September and the labour market weakened across the board. This has stoked concerns about demand for the commodity at a time when the Chinese economy is also slowing down amid a crude supply glut, analysts said. The US economy added a disappointing 142,000 jobs during the month, well below analyst estimates of 205,000 and the August jobs level of 173,000 was revised sharply lower to 136,000, surprising analysts. The July number also was lowered, bringing the average for the past three months to 167,000 jobs, lagging behind the 200,000-plus growth trend seen earlier in the year and in 2014.The unemployment rate, measuring those without work but actively seeking jobs, was unchanged as expected at 5.1 percent, the lowest level since 2008.The jobs data suggested that the US economy was being affected by the China-driven global slowdown and market volatility. In morning Asia trade, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery was up 11 cents to $45.65 and Brent crude for November jumped 15 cents to $48.28 a barrel. Both contracts also rose on Friday after a decline in US oil drilling bolstered hopes of lower production to ease the global oversupply. The disappointing US jobs report for September will clearly do little to improve investor confidence in the global economy, research house Capital Economics said.Yes, it will probably delay the first interest rate hike from the Fed until early next year.Analysts had predicted the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates either this month or in December after policymakers held back during a meeting in September. The Fed has said the timing of a rate increase will depend on the health of the US economy.

Football: Tests await for Rodgers' Liverpool successor

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool have begun their search for a new manager, but whoever comes in must grapple with many of the issues that caused problems for the sacked Brendan Rodgers. After a moribund conclusion to the previous campaign, the writing was on the wall for Rodgers and Liverpools fortunes were not deemed to have improved sufficiently for owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to stand by their man.Liverpools poor start to the season raised the question of whether FSGs blueprint for success was flawed, or if the man chosen to implement it had simply failed.Owner John W Henry, chairman Tom Werner and president Mike Gordon answered that question unequivocally with the dismissal of Rodgers after Sundays 1-1 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby, which left the club 10th in the Premier League. They have got to get the feel-good factor within the club, which we havent had for a while now, and maybe that might have tipped the balance with the owners, said former Reds striker John Aldridge. On recent evidence, the case for Rodgers to have been given more time was not without holes.Liverpools second-half display at Goodison Park summed up much of what has gone wrong for his side, who were disjointed and lacking direction.Rodgers maintained that his players were giving him everything, but the staleness of recent displays -- which had yielded one win in nine games -- suggests they will benefit from a managerial reboot. However, it is significant that FSG will expect Liverpools new boss to reinvigorate and rejuvenate an underperforming squad, rather than rip things up and start again. In other words, it will be a repetition of what those in Boston wanted when they gave Rodgers the keys to Anfield three years ago.Loyal to their strategy, FSG will seek a far-sighted coach, prepared to get his hands dirty in the moulding and developing of players, rather than a manager who provides a quick fix. That would appear to make charismatic former Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp the stand-out candidate.- Miles off -===============Ajax manager Frank de Boer could also come under consideration, but it would take a revision of FSG philosophy for an elder statesman such as former Chelsea and Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti to be targeted.FSG need Rodgers replacement to be a success to vindicate their approach, or face the prospect that they will become the focus of supporters ire. The cracks have appeared already. Those with their fingers on the pulse at Anfield -- former defender Jamie Carragher among them -- have taken a swipe at FSGs running of the club in the wake of Rodgers departure.Theyve made a lot of decisions since theyve come that havent worked, said Carragher, who highlighted the sackings of Damien Comolli and Kenny Dalglish, as well as the failings of the clubs transfer committee. At this moment the owners track record in making decisions for Liverpool Football Club over the last two or three years has not been good enough. It is miles off. What are these owners of the club going to do to get Liverpool back where they need to be?It is hard to disagree with Carraghers assertion that the five-time European champions have become a club seemingly in a permanent state of transition during Rodgers spell in charge. And whoever takes over will face many of the issues that so challenged Rodgers, particularly with regard to the nuances of Liverpools recruitment department.Although he has been swimming against the tide, Rodgers can count himself unfortunate.Any manager would have found it difficult to replace talents of the calibre of Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard, not least when transfer decisions were made by committee.Managing Liverpool, one of world footballs most iconic clubs, can be seen as a dream job.But marry the level of expectation and the weight of history with the modern constraints, and it can quickly seem something of a poisoned chalice.

Tennis: Defiant Nadal says he'll fight his way back to top

BEIJING (AFP) - A defiant Rafael Nadal warned Sunday his career was not over yet as he pledged that sooner or later he will be back at the very top of mens tennis.A tough 2015 has left many wondering whether the only thing left for the 29-year-old was retirement, but Nadal said he was prepared to scrap his way back into contention.Nadal has cut a doleful figure for much of the season but the fire was back in his eyes and the old snarl was on his face as he described how his mental composure was returning. In the US Open I did better, even if I lost the match (to Fabio Fognini in the round of 32). Tough loss, but I did better. Lets try here to do better again, Nadal, wearing a matador logo on his cap and T-shirt, said at the China Open.I think I am working well. I am very motivated to go for that challenge that brings me the chance to overcome a tough situation for me. I love that feeling, and I am going to fight to make that happen.Nadal has not got further than the quarter-finals in Grand Slams this year, even on his beloved Roland Garros clay, and he has slipped to seventh in the world from second a year ago.But the Spaniard has confounded expectations more than once by rebounding from seemingly insurmountable injury problems to reclaim his place at tenniss top table. Now he said the old confidence was coming back and he pledged to use his final tournaments of the year as preparation for next season, which includes the Australian Open in January. Its obvious that when you lose more than what you won, you lose your confidence, no? But the confidence comes back with victories and with good feelings on court, he told reporters in Beijing. In the practices, there are better feelings for me. Now it remains to compete a little bit better (in matches). But I think its coming. The Spaniard said he was working on returning the old intensity to his ferocious forehand, but more importantly, he was again finding it easier to regulate his emotions on court.I was not able to control my emotions on court for a lot of months, so when that happens its almost impossible to play well, no? he said.Last couple of months Im feeling that I recovered that. I dont feel that I am suffering on court as I did the first six, seven months of the season. I feel that I am more under control of my emotions on court. So thats a very big advance for me... I am working very hard and I have the motivation to improve my game again. So I try a little bit to play with calm. I believe that sooner or later I will be playing at a very high level again.First up for Nadal in Beijing will be Chinese wildcard Wu Di, as he looks to boost his 2015 return with a fourth title of the year.

Tennis: Ferrer wins 25th title at Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Top seed David Ferrer clinched his 25th title Sunday after beating fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 7-5 to win the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur. The match was tightly contested but Ferrers determination and deep forehands ultimately proved too much for Lopez. It was my best match of the tournament and my best performance here in Malaysia, the world number eight told reporters.I was consistent with my game and am happy with the victory. My serve was good today and it needed to be because Feliciano pressured me today.Ferrer netted victories in Qatar, Rio and Mexico prior to Sundays Malaysian triumph, winning all four finals contested this year. Its been a good year for me, winning all the finals. But I remember two years ago I lost in five finals and the statistics have changed, said Ferrer who pockets $170,600 in prize money.I have to enjoy this moment. When I end my career I wont have any of this anymore. The match was Ferrers 50th tour-level final. Others who have attained the feat are Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.Ferrers journey to win the Malaysian title included a two hour and five minute battle to overcome unseeded semi finalist Benjamin Becker from Germany on Saturday.Second seed Lopez said a change of balls in the first set had affected his rhythm on Sunday.I made some fantastic points in the first game, but a change of balls changed the momentum, he said.I was playing aggressive, but after that he was more consistent and it was difficult for me to win the points. In the mens doubles final, Treat Huey from the Philippines and Henri Kontinen from Finland won their second consecutive tournament as a pair after a 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 victory over South African Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram from the US.

Tennis: Halep injury plunges WTA Finals spot into doubt

BEIJING (AFP) - World number two Simona Halep lasted less than a set before retiring injured at the China Open on Sunday, plunging her appearance at the year-ending WTA Finals into doubt.Halep and Petra Kvitova, who was playing on painkillers and suffering the ongoing effects of glandular fever, both crashed out as the China Open lost its top two womens seeds in the first round.Romanias Halep said she would now take a break from tennis and assess if she can play the season finale in Singapore after retiring at 5-4 down in the first set against Lara Arruabarrena with a left Achilles tendon problem. My first thought is just to be healthy. Of course, every tournament is important. But the most important thing is to be okay, to feel no pain, and then I will see, Halep said.I hope I can play in Singapore. Was my goal for this year. I will see. I need treatment and I need a break, for sure.Halep, currently at a career rankings high, was understandably downcast after the return of an injury which first troubled her in 2011 and flared anew at last months Guangzhou Open.Top-ranked Serena Williams is already skipping Singapore as she seeks extra rest after a tough year, while there is a question mark over Maria Sharapova after she retired in Wuhan in the past week.Kvitovas push for a place at the eight-player event also hit a snag when she lost 7-5, 6-4 to Sara Errani, hampered by a shoulder injury and the lingering effects of glandular fever.Im kind of sleepy all day long. Its just weird, said the two-time Wimbledon champion, who was diagnosed with the energy-sapping disease earlier this year. Its just not a great feeling if you are going for a match. So I dont think it was the case to be motivated. I was coming here really motivated to do well and qualify for Singapore. Its (Singapore) still far away right now, so its kind of disappointing that way.Elsewhere, soon-to-retire US Open champion Flavia Pennetta battled past Chinas Han Xinyun 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and Agnieszka Radwanska reached round two when Coco Vandeweghe retired.Along with Vandeweghe and Halep, Lesia Tsurenko also retired as the tail-end of the womens season continued to exact a heavy toll following a number of pullouts over the last week in Wuhan.Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, who is also gunning for a spot in Singapore, beat Serbian qualifier Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round.

Football: Arsenal bulldoze Man Utd to give Wenger solace

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal produced a scintillating start to overwhelm in-form Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday and give embattled manager Arsene Wenger something to smile about.Wenger was pilloried in the British press after Tuesdays 3-2 home defeat by Olympiakos left his side struggling to avoid a group-stage exit in the Champions League, but five days on he presided over a win that equalled his best league result against United.Alexis Sanchez was the hosts inspiration, scoring with a neat back-heel and an 18-yard howitzer inside the first 19 minutes to take his tally to six goals in three games after last weekends hat-trick at Leicester City and a midweek header against Olympiakos.Mesut Ozil joined in the early onslaught, netting from Theo Walcotts seventh-minute cut-back, as Arsenal secured a win that took them up to second place, two points below leaders Manchester City.United were seeking a fourth consecutive league win, which would have seen them return to the summit, but instead Louis van Gaals met with a defeat that saw them slip below Arsenal on goal difference. It was Uniteds first loss at the Emirates Stadium since May 2011 and the manner of defeat raised questions about the durability of their title credentials, just as Arsenal were strengthening theirs.Michael Carrick was one of two changes made by Van Gaal, the other seeing Ashley Young come in at left-back, and the decision to pair Carrick with his fellow thirty-something Bastian Schweinsteiger was quickly made to look suspect as Arsenal ran riot almost from kick-off.The first goal arrived in the sixth minute, with Aaron Ramsey sliding a pass down the inside-right channel for Ozil, whose cross was brilliantly and inventively back-heeled home at the near post by Sanchez.Barely a minute later it was 2-0 as Walcott found space behind Matteo Darmian on the Arsenal left and pulled the ball back for Ozil to slot a first-time shot past a statuesque David de Gea.United had not had time to draw breath and soon Sanchez had added a third, gathering a pass from Walcott, stepping inside three defenders and slamming a thunderbolt into the top-right corner from 18 yards. It was the first time United had conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes of a Premier League match. With Wayne Rooneys first touch betraying him, Memphis Depay running down blind alleys and Anthony Martial non-existent, United were not threatening a response and Arsenal could have extended their lead before half-time.Santi Cazorla and Walcott shot wide, while Sanchez picked out Ramsey stealing into the box with a fine lofted pass from the left, only for the Welshman to miscue his volley and send the ball looping wide.A chance finally fell the visitors way a minute before the interval, but after neatly gathering Darmians cross, Martial could only drill his shot against the legs of recalled Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech.Van Gaal made two changes at half-time, introducing Antonio Valencia for Darmian and Marouane Fellaini for Depay, and farming the disappointing Rooney out to the left flank. With three central midfielders on the pitch, United became a lot less porous, even if the decision to keep Morgan Schneiderlin on the bench was puzzling.Belatedly, they began to make inroads, Cech repelling long-range efforts from Young and Rooney and then bravely diving to save at the feet of Schweinsteiger. But Arsenal squandered opportunities of their own, with Ozil and substitute Olivier Giroud spurning presentable chances by sweeping low shots straight at De Gea.A chastening afternoon for United was summed up when Rooney ballooned a shot well clear of the bar in the closing stages, prompting howls of derision from Arsenals gleeful fans.

Football: Vietto leveller hands Atletico point against Real

MADRID (AFP) - Luciano Viettos first goal for Atletico Madrid seven minutes from time earned the hosts a deserved share of the spoils against Real Madrid in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.Real looked on course to move top of La Liga thanks to Karim Benzemas fine early header in an otherwise insipid display from Rafael Benitezs men.Keylor Navas produced a fine save from Antoine Griezmanns first-half penalty, but the Costa Rican international was beaten for just the second time this season when Vietto bundled the ball home from close range. And only a spectacular save from Navas prevented Jackson Martinez snatching all three points for Atletico in stoppage time.Real maintain their two point lead over Atletico and move into second above Barcelona and Celta Vigo on goal difference, but remain a point behind leaders Villarreal.Gareth Bale was left on the bench by Benitez as he made his return from a calf injury. However, Real started the brighter and Jan Oblak had to scurry from his line to smother an effort from Benzema after just seven minutes. There was nothing the Slovenian could do, though, to prevent the Frenchman moving out on his own as La Ligas top scorer with six goals as he powered home a header from Dani Carvajals inch-perfect cross from the right.Angel Correa was the one bright spark for Atletico in the first 45 minutes and he nearly pulled the hosts level with an angled drive that flew just wide after a neat one-two with Oliver Torres. The Argentine wonder kid fired just off target again moments later as Atletico reacted well to the blow of conceding the early goal. And Diego Simeones men had a great chance to level on 21 minutes when Madrid captain Sergio Ramos chopped down Tiago inside the area.Ramos was lucky to escape with just a yellow card but Navas pulled off his second penalty save of the season from Griezmann with a brilliant low stop to his left to maintain Madrids lead.Simeone threw on Vietto, Martinez and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco in the search for an equaliser after the break as Atletico went on to dominate the second period.Fernando Torres had the first opening of the half, but dragged his shot horribly wide from Correas fine through ball.Bale was also introduced for the final 25 minutes but made little impact as Real sat back in the hope of holding onto their lead. However, Benitezs men were undone when Martinez got to the by-line and, despite Navass best efforts from Griezmanns initial effort, the ball fell kindly for Vietto to prod home.Martinez then had the chance to seal a famous comeback, but his fiercely struck effort from the edge of the area was brilliantly turned behind by Navas.Earlier, Villarreal missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table as they were beaten 1-0 at Levante.Villarreal were reduced to 10 men on 35 minutes when Bojan Jokic saw a straight red card for a high challenge on Ivan Lopez. The visitors held out until seven minutes from time when Brazilian striker Deyverson converted Nabil El Ghilass cross to take Levante off the foot of the table. The pressure on Valencia boss Nuno Espirito Santo was increased as his side blew a 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 at Athletic Bilbao. And Real Betis moved up to eighth as goals in either half from Heiko Westermann and Ruben Castro handed them a 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano.

Football: Lewandowski nets again as Bayern go seven clear

BERLIN (AFP) - Robert Lewandowski claimed his 12th goal in his last four games as Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich trounced second-placed Borussia Dortmund 5-1 to go seven points clear on Sunday. The Polish hot-shot netted Bayerns third and fourth goals at Munichs Allianz Arena after Germany forward Thomas Muellers double, including a first-half penalty.Mario Goetze grabbed Bayerns fifth to compound his former clubs misery. Its a big win. Its good to have a seven-point advantage and also to have won in the way we did, said Mueller. But we have to keep going and keep collecting points after the international break.Lewandowski sent Bundelsiga records tumbling by scoring five in just nine minutes in the 5-1 thrashing of Wolfsburg less than a fortnight ago.The 27-year-old has scored in all of Bayerns three games since, including a Champions League hat-trick in the 5-0 rout of Dinamo Zagreb. Lewandowski is the Bundelsigas top scorer with 12 goals in just seven games with Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is just behind him with 10 in eight.Dortmund suffered their first defeat in 15 games under new coach Thomas Tuchel. The gap between the chasing pack and Bayern already looks ominous, even at this early stage of the season, with Pep Guardiolas Bavarians hunting an unprecedented fourth straight league title.Dortmund dominated the opening 20 minutes, but Bayern stepped up a gear when Mueller controlled Jerome Boatengs long ball and beat Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki on 26 minutes.Dortmund conceded a penalty when Henrikh Mkhitaryan fouled Thiago in the area and Muller drilled the penalty on 35 minutes to double the hosts lead. The visitors fought back on 36 minutes when Aubameyang swept home Gonzalo Castros superb cross, but it was all Bayern from then on.Lewandowski made it 3-1 on 46 minutes when he finished off his half-chance after another superb long ball from Boateng. The floodgates opened when Lewandowski slotted home Goetzes great cross on 58 minutes, then Goetze then hit the back of the net from 12 metres out on 66 minutes.Bayern have now beaten both last seasons runners-up Wolfsburg and Dortmund, their nearest rivals in the league table, by the same heavy scoreline in recent weeks and Guardiolas side again looked peerless in Germany. We werent as clinical as they were in the final third, said Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel. The goals from the long balls were just too easy for them.Earlier, third-placed Schalke crashed to their first defeat in seven games with a 3-0 loss at home to Cologne, who took their chance to climb to fifth.Colognes French striker Anthony Modeste claimed his sixth goal in eight matches before the visitors ran riot in the final ten minutes.Cologne doubled their lead at Gelsenkirchens Veltins Arena when defensive midfielder Yannick Gerhardt netted on 79 minutes, before Simon Voller drilled home a shot, just a minute after coming on, on 84 minutes. On Saturday, Borussia Moenchengladbach continued their rise up the table as they bounced back from their midweek Champions League defeat against Manchester City with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg. Norway midfielder Haavard Nordtvelt and French-born Guinean winger Ibrahima Traore did the damage to leave Gladbach now 13th while Wolfsburg dropped to ninth. It was Gladbachs third straight league win under caretaker coach Andre Schubert following Lucien Favres sudden resignation.Hertha Berlins impressive season continued as they climbed to fourth with a 3-0 home win over Hamburg as Salomon Kalou gave the hosts a first-half lead, then Vedad Ibisevic netted twice in as many minutes.Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart remain in the bottom four after their 2-2 draw.Germany international winger Kevin Volland scored both goals for hosts Hoffenheim while bottom side Stuttgart rescued a point as Pirmin Schwegler scored a 90th-minute equaliser. Hanover won their first match of the season as they defeated Werder Bremen 1-0 thanks to the only goal on 56 minutes through French-born Senegalese international Salif Sane.Bavarias Ingolstadt, who are in their debut Bundesliga season, defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 with late goals from Pascal Gross and Stefan Lex to take sixth spot. On Friday, Mainz evened their record at four wins and four defeats in a thrilling 3-2 victory at promoted Darmstadt. Mainz are in touch of the top six while Darmstadt suffered only their second defeat of the eight-game season and lie 10th.

Football: Ibrahimovic breaks PSG goal record as OM pay penalty

PARIS (AFP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the leading goalscorer in Paris Saint-Germain history on Sunday as the reigning Ligue 1 champions extended their lead at the top following a 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Marseille.Michy Batshuayi nodded in the opener after 30 minutes at the Parc des Princes to give Marseille the lead but Ibrahimovic tucked away a pair of penalties in the space of three minutes just before the break. The second of those spot-kicks saw the Sweden striker surpass former Portugal international Pauletas 109-goal record and write himself into the capital clubs history books.Kevin Trapp then ensured the home sides lead remained intact early in the second half as he kept out an Abdelaziz Barrada penalty to help PSG extend their advantage over second-place Angers to five points.PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi said his side deserved to win. We knew Marseille would come here and give us a difficult match, said the French international. They had nothing to lose but we scored the two penalities which changed things around. We played well and it was a good performance. Its important that we keep our streak going and put results together but Marseille showed their place in the table is not deserved, althouth I dont think they deserved to win tonight (Sunday). A minutes silence was observed prior to kick-off for the victims of Saturdays heavy flooding on the French Riviera that claimed 17 lives, with four people still missing.Marseille took the lead on the half hour as Batshuayi beat David Luiz to Barradas cross to head past Trapp for his sixth goal this term. But a woeful pass back towards his own goal from Belgian striker Batshuayi four minutes before half-time proved costly with PSG awarded a penalty after goalkeeper Steve Mandanda collided with Ibrahimovic. The Swede duly converted from the spot to draw level with Pauletas mark and repeated the trick three minutes later to put PSG ahead and claim the record outright of 110 goals after Rolando had handled following a corner.Marseille won a penalty of their own 10 minutes into the second period as Serge Aurier sent Barrada sprawling but the Moroccan international saw his effort turned away by the German keeper.Javier Pastore should have put the game out of Marseilles reach on 78 minutes but the Argentine substitute was thwarted by a stunning reflex save from Mandanda. We played to the same level as PSG, I think we did a lot more than the result reflects, said Marseille coach Michel, who insisted his side think about how they take the defeat.I dont want my team to react like a little side satisfied that we troubled PSG.We cant be asatisfied that Trapp was the best Paris player tonight, we must go away sad.Earlier, Monacos stuttering early-season form continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Rennes, while Caen rose to third, level on points with promoted Angers, after beating Saint-Etienne 1-0.Rennes, whose terrific start has somewhat subsided after a fourth draw in a row, took a first-half lead at the Stade Louis II through Abdoulaye Doucoure. But Monaco fought back after the break with Brazilian Wallace scoring his first Ligue 1 goal to salvage a point for Leonardo Jardims men, who also had Danijel Subasic to thank for a second-half penalty save from Pedro Henrique.Meanwhile, Caen registered a fourth win in five as Andy Delorts 62nd-minute goal was enough to give them all three points against Saint-Etienne as Les Verts slumped to a second successive defeat, having entered the weekend in second.Lorient rallied from a goal down to beat Bordeaux 3-2 with Benjamin Moukandjo, Majeed Waris and Zargo Toure all on target for the hosts after Diego Rolan had given Willy Sagnols men a first-half lead. Both teams finished with 10 men as Lorients Lamine Gassama and Bordeauxs Andre Biyogo Poko were dismissed near the end before Adam Ounas pulled one back for the visitors.

Football: Liverpool sack Rodgers after poor start

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool sacked manager Brendan Rodgers on Sunday following a year of disappointing results that culminated in a poor start to the current season. The announcement came just hours after the five-time European champions had held Everton to a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park with another unconvincing performance.Rodgers, 42, took Liverpool to the brink of the Premier League title in 2014, but they finished sixth last season and are currently 10th in the table with 12 points from eight games. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment, Liverpools American owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) said in a statement. All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch.Rodgers arrived from Swansea City in 2012 with a reputation for expansive football and built a team around Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and captain Steven Gerrard that captivated neutrals by making a thrilling tilt at the league title in 2014.But after a costly slip by Gerrard in a 2-0 defeat by Chelsea, Liverpool lost out to Manchester City and Rodgerss subsequent attempts to re-shape his squad proved unsuccessful. He spent around 194 million pound ($294.8 million, 262.9 million euros) on new players over the last 16 months, but high-profile signings such as Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli failed to pay off, while Suarez and Gerrard have both left, along with Raheem Sterling.Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it, Liverpools management added. The search for a new manager is under way and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.Former Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp and former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, both currently out of work, have been linked with the Liverpool job in recent weeks.Speaking before news of his dismissal had broken, Rodgers said: I dont feel any pressure. I can honestly say that.People will want to put pressure on for different reasons. I dont feel it, I dont want it, but anything externally, there is no drama.Rodgerss position came under scrutiny at the end of last season, after Liverpool were humiliated 6-1 at Stoke City on the final day in Gerrards last game before joining the Los Angeles Galaxy.FSG came out in support of the Northern Irishman, who formerly worked alongside Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, but obliged him to make changes to his back-room staff.Assistant manager Colin Pascoe and first-team coach Mike Marsh both left the club, with Sean ODriscoll and former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister joining the back-room staff.Rodgers spent around 80 million pound during the close season, much of it recouped from the sale of Sterling to City for 49 million pound, but Liverpool have struggled. They have won only one of their last nine games inside 90 minutes and needed penalties to beat fourth-tier Carlisle United in the League Cup.He was maybe fortunate to stay on at the end of last season, said former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who played under Rodgers.Hell have known himself that he had to make a good start and he hasnt.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger backed Rodgers to bounce back from the setback.I am always sad when that happens because I think he is a quality manager, said the Frenchman after his sides 3-0 defeat of Manchester United. But thats the way it goes now and I wish him good luck. I am sure he will find a job again.Rodgers is the second Premier League manager to part company with a club this season after Dick Advocaat, who stood down at Sunderland earlier on Sunday.

Golf: Olesen wins Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

ST ANDREWS (AFP) - Talented Danish youngster Thorbjorn Olesen kept his nerve down the stretch to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday at St Andrews for his third victory on the European Tour. The 25-year-old becomes the youngest Dane to win three EPGA events, as he protected his overnight three-shot lead to come home two strokes clear of American pair Brooks Koepka and Chris Stroud. He fired a solid one-under final round 71 to finish on 18-under for the tournament and is the first Danish player to win the prestigious event. Five players were a further shot back on the Old Course in eastern Scotland including Thailands Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Swedens Joakim Lagergren, Chris Wood of England, Frenchman Benjamin Hebert and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger. It feels very special and Im very emotional right now, said Olesen as he cradled the giant trophy awarded to the champion. Its been a really tough year but its unbelievable to win here at St Andrews and something that dreams are made off, added the Dane, who will see his world ranking catapult to about number 75. I started badly but when I won my first tournament I started badly as well so I just told myself to be patient and keep making pars. Then I sank that amazing (50ft) putt on 15 which gave me a cushion. Sixteen and 17 are two tough golf holes and it was breezy and cold but I played them well, made two good shots and two good putts at 17, so it was nice to go to the 18th with a two-shot lead. As I said, its been a really tough year and to hold this trophy is unbelievable. There are a lot of people behind me, my coaches and my family, so I have to say a big thank you to all of them, concluded the Dane. The diminutive Olesen (1.75m/5ft 9in), who hails from Fureso, some 20km from Copenhagen, tied for second at this event in 2010, and won his first tournament at the Sicilian Open in April 2012 before adding his second win in 2014 when he finished three shots clear of French number one Victor Dubuisson at the Perth International. His best results at a major are a tie for sixth at the 2013 Masters and a share of ninth at the 2012 British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes.Another Danish player Soren Kjeldsen was part of a four-player group on 14-under and tied for ninth alongside Scotlands David Drysdale, American Stewart Cink and David Horsey of England.

Cycling: Italy's Nibali wins Tour of Lombardy

COMO (AFP) - Italys Vincenzo Nibali won the Tour of Lombardy on Sunday after launching a daring attack 17.5km from the finish to triumph in the final cycling monument of the season.Nibali, 30, the 2014 Tour de France champion, held off late chasers to cross the line in Como, after a 245km ride from Bergamo, just over 20sec ahead of Spaniard Daniel Moreno with Frenchman Thibaut Pinot finishing a close third. It was a happy ending to the season for Nibali, who hit a low point during Spains Vuelta when he ws thrown out for holding on to a team car during a stage. And he duly acknowledged a debt to Astana team-mates Mikel Landa and Diego Rosa, who worked hard to reel in Polish rider Michal Kwiatkowski and Belgiums Tim Wellens, who made the first breakaway 50km out and were back on terms by the Civiglio climb 20km from home. The team worked really well, Nibali said. I tried to go clear on the Civiglio climb, but it was hard, but I got away going downhill and I was able to finish the good work the whole team put in.Fourth place went to Spains Alejandro Valverde, with the hard-working Rosa taking fifth as reward for his tireless efforts throughout the race.Surprisingly, Nibalis victory was the first by an Italian in a major classic since 2008, when Damiano Cunego won this same race.
